Beautifully Broken

I had a friend tell me I was Broken.
Not only was I Broken but I needed fixing.
And that the only reason he became friends with me is because he wanted to fix me. “I saw that you were broken, and I wanted to fix you.”
Wow! Talk about a slap in the face.
I grew to hate this word.
All I could ever think of myself was that I am Broken, how negative it was, that’s what everyone thinks of me.
I began to believe this lie, of how the world views the word Broken.
If it’s Broken, it’s useless.
If it’s Broken, it’s worthless.
If it’s Broken, it’s not wanted.
If it’s Broken, it’s flawed.
If it’s Broken, it’s not valuable.
All these synonyms started flooding my mind as well.
And then I began to become those things.
It took over my every waking thought,
My dreams, or should I say nightmares, became about people screaming at me about how Broken I was.
Brokenness consumed me… for weeks…. Possibly months.
Then one day I was scrolling through Pinterest looking for something to paint. I saw something really simple. It was quite literally in black and white, written in cursive, it said, “beautifully flawed”.
This changed everything! I wasn’t broken, I was beautifully flawed. I was beautifully Broken.
The God I serve makes no mistakes. He is Perfect! And he made me. He not only made me, but he made me in His image! His Image is perfect.
Knowing this, changed my mindset!
Sometimes I still think I’m Broken, but now when I think this way it’s in the way God sees me. I’ve grown to love the word Broken.
Yes, I’m Broken, yes I make mistakes, no I’m not perfect, and yes I need fixing. I need a Savior who gave His life to save me, to “fix” (cleanse) my sins in the sight of God.
So, my friend was right. But not the way he meant it. The God above looks down on me with love. He sees me for all I am and still calls me His child. I’m a hair to the Throne of God! I’m beautiful! He opens His loving arms and calls out to me to run home, with all my Broken Pieces.
